Ram Rajya ....in india?...must be a lie

Don't know if I should categorize this as a collection of thoughts or let out for the anger. Lets see how this develops.

So, to start with, what most of us have heard , read since childhood that 'Bharat main ram raajya tha...' or durig lord Ram's reign, everything was pristine and truthful, where every one was honset and sincere etc. etc. !

But when I sit and think about the current situation / times and what I have seen in last 20 years of my life ( saying 20 years because before that I was too young to understand these things), I find it hard to believe. I mean how can I believe on that when I see most of the people in our Indian society are involved in some sort of corruption, dis-honesty, deceit etc.

Take example of a milk man, how many of them deliver pure unadulterated milk? If you live in Delhi, how many auto rikshaw drivers / taxi wallahs do you get who charge you honestly and not threaten you? If you go to a restraunt, how many waiters do you get who do not look at you with expectations of a tip? Seems like everyone is interested in making a few extra rupees by using any means. Its such a shame that this has become an acceptable behaviour in our society.

Yo go to a government office and its is a default assumption that you would need to pay up money to get the work done by the babus, clearks and officers, who are paid by the government ( using our tax money) to do those tasks. Some of them are so brazen that they think its their birth right to receive the bribe.

All this makes me to think that we Indias do not have the 'Seva bhav' or the attitude to serve others. How else can you explain a guard, receptionist , air india hostess and cleark / offcer at any government office talking in a rude / aggressive / discourteous manner? A job for most of the people is a routine where they go to office, move a few files around ( without much knowledge of their duties / responsibilities and the logic involved) and spend time sipping tea / smoking / eating samosas or pan and returning back to home. Hardly any thoughts are given to what they are doing in office, the consequences of not doing something or missing the timelines.

The other conclusion I came to is, that, we as a society have lowered our moral stance. We accept dishonesty and corruption as a part of life and tend to ignore them as long as these thins do not affect us directly. In every locality / colony, there are people who live beyond their known means of income , everyone knows that the person makes extra money via bribes, underhand deals or downright cheating, but the locality treats the person as a respactable , why? whats wrong in boyocotting such a person? Its not only the responsibility of the legal system to punish such people, but we should also take up the civic responsibility to show these people that they are not welcome part of an honset society. Cue, your local neta / politician.

And finally, don't we as individuals need to clean our acts ? How many of us behave in an honest way everyday? how honestly do we carry out our work / job ? How honestly do we follow the rules of the society ( traffic, queing up for something etc.) Unless we, as individuals, specially the younger generation, are ready to step up to it and change ourselves, the society is not going to improve. Is that what we want to leave for our children and future generation?

So, the question at the end is, what happened to the ram rajya? was it a lie ? was it a myth? or was it lost in the struggle to survive as a nation under foreign rule, and later a struggle to prosper and develop, under governments without clear planning and mis-informed planners / implementors? Guess that's the food for thought for everyone....
